A Medication Request Form must be filled out by your child's physician, and must either be sent into the camp office ahead of time or accompany the medication being dropped off.

Summer Camp Job Descriptions 2025


Specialists

Our Focus Camps are a lot like choosing a major in college; campers choose one specialty per session to focus on, and specialists are an essential part of their overall camp experience. In this position, you will assist the Program Lead in a variety of ways, from taking attendance to guiding campers through daily activities, as well as assisting with bathroom breaks and lunch duties. Specialists will be matched with their speciality area based on their interests and availability.

High school seniors and current college students with a background in any of these areas are encouraged to apply.

For individuals with 0-2 years of experience, weekly pay starts at $225 and is dependent on experience.
For individuals with 3+ years of experience, weekly pay starts at $375 and is dependent on experience.

General Counselor

As a General Counselor, you will play a critical role in creating a safe, fun, and memorable experience for campers while encouraging teamwork and good sportsmanship. In this position, you will be responsible for taking attendance, following a set schedule of indoor and outdoor activities that change daily, supervising campers in the locker room, on the pool deck, and during lunch. General Counselors should be energetic, engaging, and enjoy coordinating and playing recreational games (including gaga, volleyball, dodgeball, etc.) with campers in grades 2-10.

High school seniors and current college students with an interest in working outdoors are encouraged to apply.

For individuals with 0-2 years of experience, weekly salary starts at $225 and dependant on experience.
For individuals with 3+ years of experience, weekly salary starts at $375 and dependant on experience.

Program Leads (Academic)

Certified teachers are an integral part of our academic programming. Whether you are passionate about reading and writing, foreign language, the solar system, or any subject, you’ll be a perfect fit to join our staff. Program Leads are at the core of our academic camps. Here, you will be responsible for crafting and/or implementing a curriculum that challenges your campers in a fun and engaging atmosphere, as well as overseeing specialists within your program.

For academic programs (STEM, Cub Camp Science Experience, Gifted Camp), candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and an active New York State teaching certification are encouraged to apply.

For individuals with at least 1-3 years of experience, the weekly salary starts at $500.
For individuals with at least 4-5 years of experience, the weekly salary starts at $900.
For individuals with at least 6 or more years of experience, the weekly salary starts at $1,100

Program Leads (Non-Academic)

Our Camps are rooted in learning – whether that’s learning how shoot a basketball, hit a tennis ball or learn to throw the perfect spiral in Flag Football, Program Leads are at the core of these camps. Program Leads are responsible for crafting and/or implementing a curriculum that challenges your campers in a fun and engaging atmosphere, as well as overseeing counselors within your program.

For non-academic programs (Tennis, Sports Sampler, Flag Football, Adventure Education), individuals with a background in these areas are preferred.

For individuals with at least 1-3 years of experience, the weekly salary starts at $500.
For individuals with at least 4-5 years of experience, the weekly salary starts at $900.
For individuals with at least 6 or more years of experience, the weekly salary starts at $1,100

Facilities and Operations Coordinator

This role involves the daily setup and teardown of indoor and/or outdoor facilities, as well as supporting weekly special events and activities. Other responsibilities include managing distribution of camp t-shirts and giveaways, assisting in the relocation process when moving operations into a new facility, and miscellaneous tasks as needed to support camp operations.

For individuals with at least 1-5 years of experience, the weekly salary rate $500-$900.

Swim Counselor

Swim Counselors play a pivotal role in our recreation portion of the day – our American Red Cross Instructional Swim Program is a highlight of the summer for both campers and parents. While under the supervision of the Aquatic Director, Swim Counselors provide hands-on swimming instruction for campers of various ages and abilities.

You must be able to:
  1. Assess each camper at the beginning of each session to determine swimming ability.
  2. Teach swimming techniques, strokes, and water safety to campers with different swimming abilities.
  3. Plan swimming lessons that are fun and educational with the help of the Aquatic Director and/or other swim instructors.
  4. Identify incorrect swimming techniques and make corrections as needed.
  5. Monitor campers to prevent accidents and injuries in pool and on pool deck.
  6. Complete paperwork in a timely manner.
  7. Maintain and ensure proper storage of all camp equipment.
  8. Will be required to accept other duties as assigned.

Interested candidates must be able to swim at least 4 lengths of pool using any known strokes, be able to communicate with peers and campers, be passionate and enthusiastic about teaching others to swim.

For individuals with 1+ years of experience, weekly salary starts at $225.

Registered Nurse

Camp Nurses report directly to the Camp Medical Director and are responsible for helping to oversee the health and safety of campers and staff, and provide healthcare as needed. The essential job functions are:

  1. Organize, maintain and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of campers and staff.
  2. Attend to injuries and treat campers who exhibit signs of illness.
  3. Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
  4. Establish and maintain the camp's Infirmary and office.
  5. Maintain accurate health records in accordance with NY State and American Camp Association Standards.
  6. Manage the Infirmary staff and provide adequate and appropriate training.
  7. Organize and dispense medications provided by parents.
  8. Provide emotional support for individuals who need it.
  9. Accompany the sick or injured to hospitals or medical facilities if needed.

For qualified individuals, per diem rate is between $200-$375

EMT

Camp Emergency Medical Technicians report directly to the Camp Medical Director and are responsible for observing campers for illnesses and/or injuries while participating in their sport or recreation activities. EMTs are to respond to medical emergencies, treat as necessary and assess whether injuries/illnesses require further treatment. They are to report any difficulties related to health immediately to the Medical Director and Camp Director..

For qualified individuals, per diem rate is between $200-$300.

Wellness Center Counselor

Camp Wellness Center Counselors report directly to the Camp RN on Duty, and assist with daily operations of the Camp Wellness Center. Wellness Center Counselors will assist campers with minor injuries or ailments under the direct supervision of an RN. Wellness Center Counselors are often scheduled to be based out in the field to assist Camp EMT’s, or assigned to work with our youngest campers in the Cub Camp program to assist with minor medical issues as they arise.
Minimum of one year of nursing school under-graduate education is required.

For qualified individuals, weekly salary is $500.

REACH Volunteer

The REACH Program was developed on the premise that all children of different abilities or special needs should have an opportunity to experience Hofstra Summer Camps with their peers in a safe, inclusive environment that meets their social, emotional and academic needs.

The primary role of a REACH Program Volunteer is to ensure the safety and well-being of their assigned camper in a 1:1 inclusion model. As they support or “shadow” their camper through their daily camp program, the REACH Volunteer provides assistance in their social communication and acts as an advocate for their camper’s needs. While motivating their camper to participate in their program activities, the REACH Volunteer will help manage their behaviors and supervise their interactions with other campers, as needed. Helping their camper feel comfortable, welcomed, and included in their Hofstra Summer Camps program experience is of great importance. The REACH Volunteer is the first line of communication should the intervention of the Specialty Camp Director or REACH Program Director be needed to assist with their camper. Good verbal communication skills with children and adults, and the ability to understand non-verbal cues is vital. The REACH Volunteer position is a highly rewarding role that can make a difference in the life of a child with special needs. Applicants must be in at least 11th grade.
