MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH INFORMATICS

Health Informatics is a collaborative activity that involves people, process, health technologies and health analytics. According to the American Medical Informatics Association: Analytics involves the actual analysis of the data; Informatics is the application of that information.

*Note for International Students: Health Informatics is a STEM program. For international students, the STEM OPT extension is a 24-month period of temporary training that directly relates to an F-1 student's program of study in an approved STEM field.  Students who finish their program of study and participate in an initial period of regular post-completion OPT (often for 12 months) have the option to apply for a STEM OPT extension. Student could file extension request to USCIS for additional two years OPT extension.

Health Informatics is an interdisciplinary area of study that includes Healthcare, & Health Technology, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Here are some of the significant healthcare areas of knowledge that comprise healthcare analytics that is driving the high demand for Health Informatics Specialist.

  • The modernization of Healthcare Delivery Systems, The implementation of Electronic Health Records and the Incentive driven Revenue Model, Value Based Purchasing (VPB).
  • The industry is faced with an explosion of healthcare data. Healthcare data is rich and complex, it is structured or unstructured. Processing this data into information will be requires using Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning Algorithms to discover latent or hidden Insights.

To be considered for the MS in Health Informatics program, you must have completed an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.

Start your application online where you can upload the following documents:

  • Transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities. You may initially submit unofficial copies of your transcripts online for your application review, but official transcripts will be required once you are accepted into the program.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Résumé
  • Personal statement identifying your career goals, interests, and experiences

Faculty Profiles

Dr. Bernard Robinson

Dr. Bernard Robinson is Program Director and Special Instructor, Master of Science in Health Informatics, Department of Population Health at Hofstra University. Dr. Robinson has received numerous awards for service and leadership throughout his career, including the 2017 Nassau County REMSCO EMS Leadership Award, the 2021 Gold Stevie Award Frontline Medical Hero of The Year, and the 2023 Inspiration Award from the Borough of Brooklyn Center for Arts & Technology. Dr. Robinson received his MHA from Hofstra in 2019 and is the current president of the MHA Alumni Association at Hofstra.
