This exhibition features 35 posters and 19 artifacts from the Long Island Studies Institute, Special Collections, Hofstra University.
The posters in this exhibition include the work of artists such as James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy, Anton Otto Fischer, and Ellsworth Young. The poster artists of the World War I and World War II eras illustrated familiar slogans like "I want you for the U.S. Army" and "Loose Lips Sink Ships." The posters in the exhibition represent the type used in the U.S. to inspire, evoke, cajole, and remind Americans that war raged on in Europe.
Long Island's connection to the war effort was strong. Names like Roosevelt Field, Camp Upton, Camp Mills, and Mitchell Air Force Base are familiar to residents, as many Long Islanders trained for military service or were deployed from these places. Those who did not serve may have worked at defense companies such as Grumman, Republic, Seversky and Sperry.
The exhibition reflects regional and national history. These war posters, like those that were seen on the streets of Hempstead, Riverhead or Freeport offer a glimpse of the war propaganda of a bygone era.
