Ph.D. in Applied Organizational Psychology

Program Requirements

The Program requires students to complete 96 credits beyond their bachelor's degree:

  • 87 credits of core courses required of all students
    • 53 credits of which are in research methods and statistics
    • 34 credits are in disciplines related to human behavior in organizations
    • 9 credits are in elective courses chosen from advanced research methods and statistics, psychology, anthropology, sociology, economics, and business.
  • A maximum of 38 credits may be transferred from prior graduate level work and must be equivalent to corresponding courses in the program.
  • A qualifying two-stage comprehensive examination includes
    •  a multiple choice exam administered at the end of the first year of the program used to assess strengths and weaknesses
    • an essay exam administered at the end of the second year which is based on weaknesses shown in the previous year’s multiple choice exam.
  • Hofstra and our faculty will help second year students acquire a mandatory yearlong internship.
  • Students must maintain a B average each semester and receive no more than one C per semester and no more than three Cs in total toward the Ph.D.
  • Students must demonstrate satisfactory interpersonal and professional behavior, with no documented reports of unprofessional or unethical conduct.
  • A research dissertation must be completed.
  • The student must pass an oral examination, to be given subsequent to the completion of the dissertation.
