First-Year Students Timeline
June-August
- Academics
- Attend Orientation and register for Fall schedule.
- Buy a planner and other supplies to help you manage your time in the upcoming semester.
- Social
- Research Hofstra’s many clubs and organizations.
September
- Academics
- Check your Hofstra Portal for all important dates and deadlines and to make sure that you are registered for all your courses.
- Check class Blackboard site.
- On your first day of class, exchange contact information with a classmate in each class that will take notes for you in case you are absent.
- Create master schedule for yourself by using all your syllabi including all test dates, assignment due dates, and projects.
- Designate a study area where you can fully concentrate and not be disturbed.
- Seek tutoring and/or attend professors’ office hours if you find you are having any difficulties in your courses.
- Events
- Are you interested in Studying Abroad? If so, you should attend the Study Abroad Fair
- Interested in learning more about the many majors offered at Hofstra?
- Social
- Join clubs and organizations that you researched over the summer. Get involved and make the most of your time here!

October-November
- Academics
- Consider taking a Winter course.
- Make an appointment with your Advisement Dean to speak about registering for Spring.
- Meet with Major Advisor if already declared.
- Pre Health and Pre Med students meet with your pre professional advisor.
- Prepare for midterms and make sure to communicate with your professors to gage your progress.
- Seek tutoring and/or attend professors’ office hours if you find you are having any difficulties in your courses.

- Social

December
- Finish your class assignments and prepare for finals.
- Enjoy your winter break!
