President of POISE
Center for Civic Engagement
Drew Bennett says he was “born and raised” Hofstra. His father, Richard Bennett, was a longtime administrator for the University, serving as Hofstra's business and government liaison. The younger Bennett is similarly engaged in politics. He serves as the president of POISE, a student group on campus dedicated to civic dialogue and promoting free speech events on campus.
Drew has attended many of Hofstra’s Educate '08 programs and was part of a group from Hofstra that traveled to New Hampshire for the three days leading up to that state’s presidential primaries. “Having seen the political process up close, you could tell this was going to be an election unlike anything the country has ever experienced before,” he says.
Drew is clearly very excited about the Presidential debate at Hofstra. “In 2004,” he says, “people cared, but today they understand the urgency of the issues facing us. The pressure is on us to build the kind of country we want this to be. In dangerous times there is also lots of opportunity.”
Drew is an undecided independent, but he often finds himself as a campus spokesperson for John McCain, whom he supported in 2000. He concedes, “Obama and McCain were the best two candidates to focus on the issues. This is going to be a transformative election for the country, the kind of which has not been seen since Kennedy and Nixon.”
Following graduation, Drew hopes to either teach or pursue law school. “I’d like to find a way to make a difference,” he says.
