Hofstra University is grateful to those leaders who have made it possible for our University to act as host of the Commission on Presidential Debates' October 15, 2008 economics and domestic policy debate.

The Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University was established in 2006 through a generous commitment from Hofstra trustee and alumnus Peter S. Kalikow. Peter S. Kalikow is president of H.J. Kalikow & Company, LLC; former chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority; and a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Mr. Kalikow, who graduated from Hofstra in 1966 with a B.S. in business administration and was awarded an honorary doctorate of law degree in 1986, currently serves as a member of Hofstra's board of trustees.

The John D. Miller Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation is also an underwriter of Hofstra University's Educate '08 initiative and the hosting of the October 15 debate. John D. Miller is cofounder and former chief financial officer of Arterial Vascular Engineering, which was a California-based manufacturer of medical equipment. The sale of AVE allowed him to move back to Long Island and gave him the means to begin his philanthropic activities. Mr. Miller, who graduated from Hofstra University with a B.B.A. in accounting in 1979, is currently chair of Hofstra's board of trustees and The Campaign for Hofstra University.

David S. Mack '67, president of The Mack Company and a Hofstra trustee and alumnus, is a longtime supporter of Hofstra University and helped to spearhead the planning and construction of the sports and exhibition arena that now bears his name. The arena is the venue for the October 15 presidential debate at Hofstra.

Mr. Mack, who was named 2006 Alumnus of the Year at Hofstra, is also vice chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and a 1967 Hofstra graduate with a degree in business administration. The student center at Hofstra is named for Mr. Mack and his wife, Sondra, in honor of his longtime support for the university.
