Democracia USA is a national nonpartisan voter registration and civic engagement program that operates in 5 states throughout the U.S. In 2006, Democracia USA was recognized by the Associated Press with registering 60 percent of the newly registered Hispanic voters in the country. Currently, the organization is actively involved in registering Hispanics for the November Election.
The event will present an unprecedented study entitled "The Most Influential Hispanic Americans," which surveyed 500 Hispanics throughout the country to determine who Hispanics were turning to for political news and information. From the results, Democracia was able to pinpoint 15 Influential Hispanic Leaders. The Influential leaders include: Henry Cisneros, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico to name a few.
These influential leaders will be attending the final Presidential Debate at Hofstra and will be presented with the results and a token of appreciation at an on-campus press conference on Oct.15th, 2008. Democracia will be co-sponsoring this event with the student club, Hofstra Organization of Latin Americans (H.O.L.A.). H.O.L.A seeks to educate the Hofstra community about Latino culture, and educational, political, and social issues impacted the community.
