NASDAQ Opening Bell Ceremony

9 - 10 a.m., New York City

Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz leads Commission on Presidential Debates commissioners and board members, Hofstra trustees, faculty and students, and elected officials in the ringing of NASDAQ’s opening bell.

Democracy in Performance

9:15 a.m. - 3 p.m., “Revival tents,” South Campus

American democracy comes to life in live performance by fully costumed, professional and student performers. The program provides civic education about major American accomplishments.

Keynote event
9:15-11 a.m., John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus

John and Abigail Adams warm up the crowd with a brief exchange from their famous letters; Abraham Lincoln and black abolitionist Frederick Douglass take on slavery, the Civil War and the status of black Americans.

Other featured portrayals include Will Rogers, Walt Whitman, Frances B. Harper, Robert Frost, Mother Jones, Susan B. Anthony, Victoria Woodhull, Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Teddy and Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and the Statue of Liberty.

“Debate Is Performance!”

The culmination of the Educate ’08

“Debating as Performance Art” workshop focusing primarily on the creation of short plays in a debate format using the tenets of Neo-Futurism. New York Neo-Futurist company member Christopher Dippel directs.
