June 8, 2006
A public meeting to consider Nassau County's 200 special tax districts was co-sponsored by The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University® and was held at the John Crawford Adams Theater. Over 400 people attended, including elected officials, representatives from the various local tax agencies, civic leaders and interested residents.
The conference agenda and goals were presented by Comptroller Howard S. Weitzman and a talk about tackling the property taxes one step at a time was delivered by Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi. The following three panels followed:
- Panel 1: Special Districts in Nassau County: Current Practices and Structure
- Panel 2: Special Districts in Nassau County: Problems and Solutions
- Panel 3: Town Hall Forum with Elected Officials
- A question and answer period.
Closing remarks were delivered by Executive Dean of The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University®, Richard V. Guardino, Jr.
The conference objective was to sponsor a nonpartisan effort by Nassau's top elected officials to raise public awareness and inspire further research on the more than 200 special districts in Nassau County and their impact on taxpayers.
Further meetings with the leadership of the water, fire and sanitation districts are planned to continue the dialogue about realistic cost-savings opportunities.
