Richard Nixon
A Retrospective on His Presidency

November 19-21, 1987

The Hofstra Cultural Center's sixth Presidential Conference, Richard Nixon: A Retrospective on His Presidency, gathered together leading scholars, journalists and former government officials to discuss a presidency whose major events are unforgettable.

Just a few of the key figures involved with the Nixon Presidency and/or the Watergate scandal who attended the conference include Elliot Richardson, H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, Chalres Colson, Egil Krogh, Earl J. Silbert, and Brent Scowcroft. A highlight of the conference was an address by Henry A. Kissinger, 56th Secretary of State from 1973-1977. The banquet speaker was Tom Wicker, a political columnist at The New York Times.

Some of the panel topics included "Reorganization of the Executive Branch," "The Opening to China," "Defense Policy and Military Manpower," "The Protest Movement," "Watergate Re-examined," "The Silent Majority: Support for the President," "The Ending of the Vietnam War," and "Impeachment Proceedings."

In addition, there was also a high school colloquium with Stephen E. Ambrose and H.R. Haldeman. The Hofstra Museum presented a exhibition of books, manuscripts, photographs and political memorbilia on Richard Nixon in the David Filderman Gallery on the ninth floor of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus.

Notable contributions include David Caputo's analysis of revenue sharing and Michael Balzano's study of the adrift Democrats who emerged as Nixon's silent majority and ultimately as the Reagan coalition..."
