As part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Hofstra University the Hofstra Cultural Center held it's fifth Presidential Conference, Lyndon Baines Johnson: A Texan in Washington on April 10-12, 1986.

Highlights of the conference included a keynote address by Barbara Jordan, U.S. House of Representatives, 1972-1978; a forum on "The Vietnam War in Perspective," featuring members of the Johnson Administration; President Johnson's daughters, Lynda Johnson, Robb and Luci Johnson Turpin talking about memories of their father; a banquet address by former Presidential Assistant and Press Secretary Bill D. Moyers; an address by Charles S. Robb, President Johnson's son-in-law and the former Governer of Virginia; and an address by Pulitzer-prize winning biographer Robert A. Caro.

Panel topics included "Building the Great Society," "Minorities and the Great Society," "Lyndon B. Johnson and the Courts," "Civil Rights," "Science, Technology and Space," "The Press Corps," and "Lyndon B. Johnson and the World." As part of the conference there was also a display of Lydon B. Johnson books, manuscripts and political memorabilia in the David Filderman Gallery in the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library.

After the conference papers and presentations were complied into a book, Lyndon Baines Johnson and the Uses of Powers, edited by Bernard J. Firestone and Robert C. Vogt, published by Greenwood Press in 1988. The list price is $79.50.
