The Hofstra Cultural Center presented its 10th Presidential Conference, George Bush: Leading in a New World, on April 17-19, 1997. George W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, was in office from 1989-1993. The conference featured detailed discussions of the actions and policies of the Bush Administration in an effort to give conference attendees some explanation and understanding.
President George W. Bush, Barbara Bush, Dan Quayle and Former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail S. Gorbachev all attended the conference. Other participants included James A. Baker III, Secretary of State; Brent Scowcroft, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs; Richard B. Cheney, Secretary of Defense; William H. Webster, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency; Robert Mosbacher, Secretary of Commerce; Andrew H. Card, Jr., Secretary of Transportation and Deputy Chief of Staff; and The Right Honorable Brian Mulroney, former Prime Minister of Canada.
Panel topics included "Divided Government: Relations With Congress," "Arms Control and Reduction," "Defense Posture and Base Closings," "Ending the Cold War," "The Inner Dynamics of the Bush White House," "Latin America," " The Middle East Peace Process," "Desert Shield and the Gulf War," "Americans With Disabilities Act," "Gulf War Legacies," "Somalia and Bosnia," and "The Far East."
There was a Hofstra student panel on which Brent Scowcroft was a discussant and a high school colloquium with William H. Webster among others.
In addition, there were two exhibitions in the Hofstra Museum in conjunction with the conference. 1,000 Points of Light, 100 Hours of War: The George Bush Presidency, 1989-1993 was shown in the David Filderman Gallery, Ninth Floor, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library. Images of the Persian Gulf War: Selections from the United States Air Force Art Collection was shown on the 10th Floor of the Axinn Library.
