Hofstra accepts transfer students to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program.

Hofstra University has launched a four-year Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing degree program that will provide the educational, clinical, and experiential base for entry-level professional practice, as well as the platform on which to build a career through graduate-level study and lifelong learning.

Hofstra Northwell Connection

Hofstra’s undergraduate nursing program leverages the clinical and educational resources of both Hofstra University and Northwell Health, New York State’s largest healthcare provider and private employer. The program is the latest collaboration in the academic-practice partnership between the two institutions following the establishment of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. Clinical placements are within one of our partnering Northwell facilities.

Examples of Clinical Placements Include: 
Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, Lenox Hill Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, Huntington Hospital, and South Oaks Hospital

Geriatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Pediatrics, and Surgical

General Transfer Admission Requirements

  • Transfer students include those that completed at least one semester of college and should not submit an application until semester grades have been finalized. Internal transfer students (change of major) students must meet the nursing program admission guidelines outlined to be considered for admission.
  • Hofstra's academic programming requires a minimum of 3 years of full-time study to complete the BS in Nursing. This means that students will be entering as either a freshman or sophomore even though credit hours may equate to a junior or senior. This may affect students' timelines for completing their overall undergraduate degree as well as impact their scholarship allocations.
  • Students interested in transferring into Hofstra’s nursing program are subject to all policies related to Hofstra University's transfer credit policy for all non-major requirements.
  • Transferring students may request a credit evaluation before applying through undergraduate admission.
  • Transfer students who do not have an associate degree or higher must submit a copy of their high school transcript as proof of high school graduation.

Requirements for Consideration for Transfer Admission to BS in Nursing

  • A minimum cumulative college grade point average of 2.75 is required for admission. The program is highly selective and a 2.75 GPA does not guarantee admission.
  • Students who have been dismissed from another nursing program will not be admitted for transfer to the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Transfer credit will not be awarded for any clinical nursing course.
  • Transfer credit will be awarded for grades of C+ or higher.
  • Courses transferring in for credit must be completed within 7 years of the date of enrollment.
  • Biology and chemistry transfer courses must include a lab component in order to be considered for transfer credit or for degree completion.
  • Applicants with a strong background in mathematics and science (e.g., algebra, biology, and chemistry) are preferred.

Submit Your Application

The priority deadline to apply for transfer into Hofstra's nursing program is March 1, 2025. While we will review applications after this, we recommend submitting them by the March 1, 2025, priority deadline. Applications can be submitted via the Common Application or Hofstra’s Transfer Application.

  • Students must indicate a major of nursing on their application to be considered.
  • Applicants may be asked to take part in an interview before receiving an admission decision.
  • Admission to this program is highly selective with limited seating offered. Please keep in mind that seats may be filled prior to the deadline.

FAQ

If I already have a BA degree, can I still apply to the undergraduate nursing program as a transfer student?

All applicants for Hofstra's undergraduate nursing program must not have already obtained a BA degree. Applicants who have a BA degree are encouraged to contact our Graduate admission team.

Can I be a part-time student and still be in the program?

At this time, all students must attend Hofstra full-time in order to be complete the program’s requirements.

Can international studies apply for the undergraduate nursing program?

All applicants for Hofstra’s nursing program must be either U.S citizens or permanent residents at the time of application submission.

Am I able to enroll in the nursing program at any point in the year?

No, the nursing program only accepts new students and begins its coursework in the fall semester.

Does Hofstra require the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) exam?

No, we do not require the TEAS exam to be considered for admission into the nursing program.

Can I transfer my college credits, AP, IB, and/or dual enrollment credits into Hofstra’s nursing program?

Yes. After being admitted, you will receive a credit evaluation and a plan of study outlining which of your previous credits will transfer to Hofstra and what remaining requirements you will need to complete.
