In recognition of Exercise is Medicine Month in May 2023 and National Public Health Week in April 2023 (and the collaborative advocacy efforts exercise and public health professionals conduct in promoting active lifestyles for better health), the Exercise is Medicine on Hofstra Campus pre-professional club and the Future Healthcare Leaders (undergraduate Exercise Physiology and graduate Health Administration program student clubs) will be sponsoring the Steps Plus: Hofstra Fitness and Health Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to accumulate as many steps as possible each day throughout the two weeks. (A team average for each day will be recorded.) In addition to steps acquired through walking, jogging, and other activities throughout the day, steps will be 'awarded' for time spent participating in mental health promotion activities and for completing health challenges posted daily on the Steps Plus Blackboard page. Gift prizes of $300, $200, and $100 will be awarded to the teams finishing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd! The sign-up site will be available soon. (ALL team members must sign up individually.) This event is FREE, but we request that each person who is participating donate a non-perishable food item for donation to the Hofstra University Pride Pantry located in the Hofstra Dome. Preventing Health Worker Burnout
4:30-6:20 p.m.
Cultural Center Theater
Health care worker burnout was considered to be at crisis levels for many prior to the COVID pandemic. The pandemic significantly exacerbated the crisis at levels which continue to the present time. The Surgeon General reported approximately half of nurses and 20% of physicians plan to leave their profession, while serious nurse and physician shortages are already evident in many parts of the country. Burnout is cited as a major reason for clinical workers' plans to leave their professions.
The objectives for this presentation include getting at the root causes of health care worker burnout and exploring strategies to address health care workers’ well-being and build worker resilience.

The Empowerment of Having a Lab of One’s Own: Research on Cholera, Climate, and Human Health with Dr. Rita Colwell
1-2:25 p.m.
Cultural Center Theater
Climate and the oceans historically have been closely intertwined with human health. Advances in information technology have brought new discoveries – from outer reaches of space, where satellite remote sensing monitors circle the earth, to next generation sequencing and bioinformatics. Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of cholera and major pandemics, yet it is an aquatic bacterium distributed globally in estuaries throughout the world, notably the Bay of Bengal and coastal regions globally. Models we developed to understand and predict outbreaks of cholera derive from work done in the Chesapeake Bay and the Bay of Bengal. The models are now used by UNICEF and aid agencies to determine risk of cholera in Yemen and other countries of the African continent. With the onset of COVID-19, the models have been modified to predict COVID-19, the current pandemic of coronavirus.
This event is sponsored by the Hofstra Cultural Center and the Department of Geology, Environment, and Sustainability.

Brewington, Civil Rights Attorney; Joel Brown, Assistant Professor, Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions; and Mayo Bartlett Civil Rights Attorney and moderated by Martine Hackett, Chair of the Department of Population Health.

Student Center Plaza Room Middle/West.
Public health is a diverse field that encompasses a variety of career paths, from traditionally working in community organizations to healthcare and research settings. Although working in public health is an exciting concept, too many options can leave many students and recent graduates feeling overwhelmed by the job search process. This event allows attendees to listen, ask questions, and engage with public health professionals working across the core disciplines of public health. Our panel of distinguished public health practitioners will provide knowledge, advice, and tools that cannot be acquired through coursework and textbooks. This is an opportunity you do not want to miss! This event is co-sponsored by Hofstra's Delta Kappa Chapter of the Delta Omega Public Health Honors Society and the Public Health Alumni Association.

Grand Audiology Debate
4:30-6:20 p.m.
Student Center Plaza Room Middle/West.
Topic: Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Audiology
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) refers to the use of non-allopathic methods to treat illness. These include acupuncture, acupressure, traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Korean medicine, ayurveda, homeopathy, non-prescription drugs, herbs, and supplements. With the rise in the use of CAM to treat audiological conditions such as permanent hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears), audiologists face the challenge of conveying culturally sensitive yet evidence-based information to their patients. This student-led debate - relevant to the National Public Health Week 2023 theme of "Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health" - will explore both sides of this important and timely topic.
