I Got This

Dallas Jackson ’25

People who know me today are always shocked when I tell them how shy and reserved I was in high school. Back then, I preferred to be unnoticed, in the background. Being a student at Hofstra totally changed that about me. This is a place where you won’t just be another face in the crowd – you’ll be known, supported, and encouraged to make your mark. At Hofstra, you’ll find a welcoming community where professors remember your name, classmates become lifelong friends, and opportunities are everywhere!

Whether it’s joining a club, taking on a leadership role, or diving into hands-on learning experiences, there are countless ways to get involved and shape your own path. I can truly say that joining WRHU, Hofstra Entertainment Access Television (HEAT), and the Student Government Association, and working as a Pride Guide have changed my life for the better. There are not enough ways to say thank you to the place that taught me the magic of saying yes, diving in, and believing in myself!

Hofstra is more than just a university – it’s a place where your voice matters, your dreams are possible, and your journey is uniquely yours.

I can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make here. Welcome to the Pride!

MORE ABOUT DALLAS

When aspiring sports journalist and Boston native Dallas Jackson began her college search, she was looking for one thing above all else: a top-tier communications program that would give her hands-on experience in the world of sports media.

That search led her to Hofstra University.

From her first day on campus, Dallas was impressed by The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication and its strong focus on experiential learning. She quickly got involved with WRHU-88.7 FM, Hofstra’s four-time Marconi Award-winning radio station. The opportunities came fast: sideline reporting for Hofstra’s NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball and even a chance to broadcast on Madison Square Garden Networks. "What college student can say they’ve done that?" she asked.

Hofstra’s unique partnership with professional teams like the New York Islanders gave Dallas access to pre-professional experiences that are hard to come by. Combine that with mentoring from professors who are industry veterans and an environment that encourages students to lead, and it’s easy to see why Dallas’ talents have flourished.

She also credits her growth to the strong support circle she has outside the Herbert School, including Laila Drosman, senior associate director of Hofstra’s visit experience, and the friends she met working as a Pride Guide for Hofstra Admissions. “Hofstra is a place that has felt like home, even though I was far from my real one,” she says. Whether it was grabbing lunch on campus or late-night video editing sessions with classmates, little moments became the foundation of lifelong memories.

Outside the classroom, Dallas interned at SportsNet New York (SNY), where she worked as a content media desk intern during football and baseball seasons, another opportunity made possible by Hofstra’s proximity to New York City and its strong media connections.

As she looks toward graduation and a future in the sports broadcasting world, Dallas says Hofstra taught her how to lead, how to hustle, and most importantly, how to believe in herself. Her advice to future students? “If you're looking for a school that will challenge you, support you, and open doors you didn’t even know existed – Hofstra is it.”

» Dallas’ story isn’t unique. In fact, among Hofstra University’s 2022-2023 undergraduate degree recipients, 100% of alumni from the journalism program at The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication reported they were employed or had started or were planning to start graduate school within one year of graduation. Results are based on data collected from the Alumni Outcomes survey, LinkedIn, National Student Clearinghouse, and Hofstra enrollment (83% knowledge rate).
