Eric Rowland
Associate Professor of Mathematics
Degrees
PHD, Rutgers University; BA, Univ Calif Santa Cruz
Bio
Before joining the faculty at Hofstra, Eric Rowland held postdoctoral positions at Tulane University, the University of Waterloo, the University of Québec at Montréal, and the University of Liège.
Teaching Interests
Dr. Rowland has taught upper-level courses in combinatorics, number theory, experimental mathematics, and other areas. He frequently teaches Mathematical Excursions, which introduces non-math majors to several topics in number theory in an interactive way. On his YouTube channel, he creates videos about surprising results in number theory. He was awarded the 2021 Award for Distinguished Teaching by the Metro New York Section of the Mathematical Association of America. His current projects include a combinatorics textbook, The Hierarchy of Integer Sequences.
Research Interests
Dr. Rowland is interested in arithmetic properties of integer sequences that arise in combinatorial settings. He uses software extensively in the research process to generate and manipulate data, develop conjectures, and prove theorems. He has authored over 40 papers and has mentored over 80 students in research projects, including several Hofstra students who have obtained publishable results and have given talks about their research at conferences.
