Bio
Professor Elfreda Blue has a Ph.D. in Special Education with a concentration in literacy from the State University of New York at Buffalo. At Hofstra University, she is associate professor of special education and serves as program director for Elementary Special Education Programs. She previously taught at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she served as Associate Dean for Urban Education and Program Development. Dr. Blue was a classroom teacher for ten years in inclusive and special education urban classrooms throughout New York State. She is a 2004 recipient of the International Reading Associations’ Albert Harris Award for her part in “Investigating the Effectiveness of an Integrated Learning System on Early Emergent Readers, published in Reading Research Quarterly (vol. 38, no 2). Other research studies have been published in Reading Writing Quarterly, Insights on Learning Disabilities, The Journal of Intercultural Disciplines, and US China Education Review. Dr. Blue’s research focuses on socio-cultural perspective and literacy for students with learning disabilities and preparing teachers to teach diverse populations. Dr. Blue has served as vice president, president-elect, and president of the New York State Chapter of the Council of Exceptional Children. She is a founding board member of two non-profit organizations: the Harlem Education Guild and Adventists Against AIDS in Africa.
