Bio

Dr. Petra received a Ph.D. in accounting from Rutgers University. He also holds a B.S. in accounting and an M.S. in taxation from Long Island University, C.W. Post campus. Dr. Petra is a certified public accountant.
Before joining the faculty at Hofstra University, Dr. Petra taught at the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury on Long Island, where he served as chair of the Accounting and Business Law Department. He is responsible for establishing the Accounting Society and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at Old Westbury. He has taught courses in financial and managerial accounting as well as in taxation.
Dr. Petra is a consultant to the investment banking industry in New York City. His professional experience includes working as a senior tax specialist at Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, where he was responsible for training the accounting staff on the preparation of U.S. expatriate tax returns. He has also worked as a state tax accountant for Combustion Engineering, Inc. Prior to obtaining his doctoral degree, Dr. Petra maintained a public accounting practice, where he served small and growing businesses.
Dr. Petra's research interests include capital markets as well as taxation. His dissertation is titled The Effects of Governance Structure and Ownership Structure on The Informativeness of Earnings. He has published in Corporate Governance, Economics of Governance, The CPA Journal, Taxes-The Tax Magazine, The Tax Adviser, The Practical Accountant, and RN Magazine.
Dr. Petra is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Accounting Association.
