Recently Completed Projects
- Physical Education Building Second Floor
The second-floor renovations provided new space for the School of Health Services including four new classroom spaces, computer lab and faculty offices, and new floor, ceiling, lighting and audio-visual and information technology. - John Cranford Adams Playhouse
The complete renovation of the interior theater, upgrade of the building infrastructure and expansion of the entrance lobby was completed in Fall 2017. The theater will soon be named for benefactors Toni and Martin Sosnoff. - Dunkin Donuts- The conversion of the Café on the Quad dining facility to a fully licensed Dunkin Donuts franchise was opened in March in Roosevelt Quad.
Current Projects
- Frank G. Zarb School of Business Extension
The construction of the new 52,000 square foot building adjacent to CV Starr Hall will house our Frank G. Zarb School of Business administration, faculty and Career Center offices, as well as student collaborative space, small group study areas and the new Center for Entrepreneurship. Ground was broken in May 2017 and the new building is being constructed on the East Campus between CV Starr Hall, Monroe Lecture Hall and Gittleson Hall. A new parking lot east of the building was added in Summer 2017. The building's exterior will feature a landscaped walkway leading to California Avenue, and a large entrance plaza shared with CV Starr Hall that provides an open pedestrian sitting area. The University initiated a full environmental review with traffic study for the proposed new School of Engineering building to be located on the east campus. - Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library HVAC Systems
A two-year project is underway to replace HVAC piping throughout the Axinn Library.
Planned Projects Beginning Summer 2018
- CV Starr Hall Renovationsand introduction of Einstein's Bagels.
- HofUSA Renovations and introduction of 'all day diner' restaurant concept.
- Colonial Square East Townhouse Renovations- Plymouth, Jamestown and Newport House public areas, bathrooms, floors and lighting will be updated.
- Berliner Hall Chemistry classrooms and the new Organic Chemistry lab and other classroom lab spaces have begun and will continue through the summer of 2018.
- Townhouse Residence Halls in Colonial Square
Beginning in May 2018, three buildings in the Colonial Square East complex- Jamestown House, Newport House and Plymouth House will have upgrades to common lounges and kitchens, bathrooms, HVAC unit replacements, furnishings and LED lighting throughout the buildings. Renovations were completed in all 11 buildings in the Netherlands complex, and 9 buildings in the Colonial Square complex. The work is part of the $25 million major capital improvement project to fully renovate the Netherlands and Colonial Square residential townhouses. - Constitution and Enterprise Residence Halls Refresh
The complete renovation of all 24 bathrooms in the Constitution and Enterprise Residence Halls will be completed this summer. The project will provide flooring & wall tile, bathroom fixtures including electric hand dryers, lighting, and fresh paint.

- CV Starr Hall- Interior classroom, restrooms and lounge renovations.
- Campus wide- Fire system improvements and hydrant replacements.
- Maurice A. Deane School of Law- Roof replacement.
- Student Center- Creation of a Student Center east plaza and landscaping improvements.
- Bits and Bytes Renovationsand introduction of Moe's Southwest Grill.
Sustainable Building and Energy Management
Facilities and Operations demonstrates and supports Hofstra's longstanding commitment to sustainable practices. Some recent projects include:
- Hofstra is an EPA Green Power Partner and purchases 30% green power annually.
- Over 100 bottle filling stations are located across the campus. The first station was installed in 2009.
- Expanded collection of recyclables throughout the campus.
- Lighting Upgrades- Hofstra is continually converting to LED lighting in indoor campus spaces. Improvements to the campus entryways, roadways and parking areas are currently underway.
- Three electric vehicle charging stations installed on campus.
- REV Campus Challenge Achiever member. The REV Campus Challenge promotes clean energy efforts by recognizing New York State Colleges and Universities that implement clean energy projects and principles on campus, in the classroom and in surrounding communities.
- The USGBC (US Green Building Council) LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification was awarded for the extension of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell extension in May 2016. The Frank G. Zarb School of Business extension project, connecting to the CV Starr building with a second-floor bridge, is designed and built to LEED Silver Certification standard, with the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
2016/2017 Projects
- Parking Area East Campus- Adjacent to CV Starr Hall on the East Campus.
- David S. Mack Student Center Pride Den and Greenhouse- Reopened in February 2017 with major improvements for student study, collaboration and entertainment. The new facility included all new furnishings, internet connections and some audio-visual components. The facility was formerly known as the Rathskeller. - Oak Street Center- Opened in December 2016 after a two-year renovation of the former Oak Street Armory was completed. The building is now occupied by the Hofstra Continuing Education, ROTC, Business Development Center and Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.
- Todd A. Gittleson Hall- Technical, laboratory and classroom upgrades.
- Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University – Courtroom upgrades and ADA restroom upgrades.
- East Bridge- Structural repairs and stair replacement of the walking bridge at Uniondale Avenue.
- Campuswide Landscaping Improvements- including East Entrance at Earl Ovington Blvd and West Entrance at Oak Street.
- Axinn Library Center for Academic Excellence- Expansion and move from second floor to third floor.
- Wellness and Campus Living Center- Renovation for Division of Student Affairs moves.
- Frank G. Zarb School of Business Extension- 52,000 square foot extension of CV Starr Hall
- Residence Halls- Bill of Rights and Estabrook Hall bathroom renovations and the Estabrook Hall elevator modernization were completed in Summer 2017.
- Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell- New student lounge area.
- Hagedorn Hall- Technical upgrades and restructuring of office and classroom space was completed in Summer 2016.
- Hofstra Hall Renovation
The historic site of the original Hofstra College was refurbished during the Fall of 2014. Home of the Hofstra Alumni Development and University Relations departments, the space received an entirely new exterior siding, roof and windows. - Physical Education Building Basketball Practice Facility n August 2014, Hofstra completed a dedicated basketball practice facility for the Men's and Women's Basketball programs. The 14,000-square foot practice facility features a new court with eight baskets, a sound system, filming system with smart TV for video, signage and graphics. The facility includes an athletic training area with cardio equipment and movable partition, sound proofing, safety matting and the new floor design. - Academic and Event Facilities Building renovation projects completed in 2014 included the Student Center Multipurpose Room, Sanford Hammer Computer Lab, Axinn Library Lower Level Study Area and Gittleson Hall greenhouses and laboratories. Building upgrades to Barnard, Davison, Gittleson, Calkins, Berliner, Breslin and Heger Halls will provide additional energy efficiency measures including lighting, heating and air conditioning, windows and roofs. Furnishings and technical improvements were also added, and the campus has an additional 15 new technology classrooms.
- Grounds and Landscaping A comprehensive landscaping beautification program for the North Campus grounds was completed. A new plaza with a natural grass area and seating was completed adjacent to the Hof USA complex. The East Campus gate and central intersection on the North Campus were reconfigured to provide improved traffic control. Walkways connecting the Student Center to the Netherlands residence halls were improved. New plantings further enhanced the landscape.
- Residence Hall Upgrades The replacement of all windows, blinds, carpeting and refurbishment of air conditioning units was completed in the six Tower residence halls- Alliance, Bill of Rights, Constitution, Estabrook, Enterprise and Vander Poel – to provide all season comfort and better energy management.
- Donald E. Axinn Library Student Lounge The transition of the Donald E. Axinn Library periodicals and study area to an improved study area was completed in 2014. Included in the renovation are ground level space with an enlarged open floor area and unique study furnishings and LED lighting. Technology upgrades were added including charging stations and SMART group study cubicles, SMART boards to some small group study rooms on floors 4-8 and new study desks and chairs in the Library Reference Reading room. The second floor Collaborative Learning Center and Lounge replaces a Hofstra Honors College lobby and Government documents area. Visit the Hofstra Libraries website for more information.
