ERASMUS + Jean Monnet Module Co-funded by the European Union
“Interrogating Hate: Addressing Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and Racisms in the European Union and at Home”
This module focuses on examining the EU’s role in addressing anti-discrimination with regards to several communities including: women, Jews, Muslims, Roma, recent EU immigrants, LGBTQI communities, and communities of color. Moreover, the module examines how the EU addresses hate crimes, which is one important mechanism related to combatting acts against minorities. Anti-discrimination is a cornerstone of a democratic society and promotes inclusion and greater cultural understanding. Diversity has become a focus on US campuses, but most students are not aware of what is being done in the EU to address similar issues, and the challenges within a European context. Learning about the EU's role and policies in anti-discrimination will help students understand common EU values, principles of unity and diversity, Europe's historical heritage and the extent to which Europe is a diverse society. In some courses, students will compare anti-discrimination and hate crime policies in the EU and the US.
The module will incorporate EU anti-discrimination and hate crime policies within 6 select courses across 4 disciplines: political science, religion, Jewish studies and history. Four faculty will incorporate EU anti-discrimination and hate crime policy into the content of their courses, teaching 398 students. Five invited speakers who are experts in these areas will help to supplement these courses, and the events will be advertised and open to the public. All speakers’ presentations will be OER and posted on the web facilitating international diffusion of information, and research will be presented at an academic conference and published. In addition, 16 students will be given an opportunity to participate in experiential learning as part of the SUNY Model EU and 25 students will also take part in a policy briefing at the EU Delegation in Washington DC to learn more about the EU and specifically about the EU’s anti-discrimination policies.
