DeMatteis Experiences in Professional Training and Hiring (DEPTH)

In today’s competitive work environment, it’s important to have hands-on experience beyond the classroom. The DeMatteis School is making sure Hofstra engineering students are set up for success through the DEPTH program.

The DeMatteis Experiences for Professional Training and Hiring (DEPTH) program has been created to provide specific opportunities for students to fulfill that requirement and be better prepared for entering the working world. Every student must complete at least one professional activity prior to graduation. Examples of meeting this criterion include:

  1. Take SEAS 100 and then work as a Co-op student
  2. Work as an intern in a field related to a major
  3. Maintain paid employment in any field
  4. Participate in the W-SPiCE summer program and take SEAS 100
  5. Participate in the ASPiRe program
  6. Do faculty-supervised research
  7. Participate in school-sanctioned competition(s) or other profession-oriented activities
  8. Volunteer at a charitable or nonprofit organization

Attainment of this requirement will be reviewed and determined by the engineering department. Official acknowledgment of the successful completion of this degree requirement will appear on the student’s transcript after approval by the Dean’s Office.

FAQ:

When must this requirement be completed?

Since this is a graduation requirement, you have until your senior year to complete this requirement.

What happens if I don’t complete it by my senior year?

You must complete it to receive your diploma.

Do I get academic credit for completing this ELA requirement?

No, but you will have a more competitive resume that will help you get that entry-level professional job once you graduate.

Will the School find me or place me in an internship?

No, you need to search and apply to internships. The School will help you by making information available about opportunities and, by taking the SEAS 100 course, you will learn how to search for internships, successfully prepare a competitive resume, and perform successfully in interviews.

I am a transfer student. Do I need to complete the DEPTH program’s ELA graduation requirement?

Yes, but if you have already completed one of the ELA activities at your previous school, you can submit proof of it, and my office will review it to see if we can accept it.

What if I have completed an activity that I believe meets the requirement but is not on the list, can it be accepted as satisfying the ELA requirement?

Submit a description of the activity along with proof that you completed it, and my office will review it to see if we can accept it.

After I complete my ELA and submit all the documentation required, how will I know that I can graduate?

Once everything is submitted and approved, it will be indicated on your Degree Works as completed.
