Why did you choose to attend Hofstra?
I was drawn to the dual degree program that Hofstra offered in speech language pathology. Additionally, I really enjoyed the campus atmosphere and envisioned myself fitting into the environment!
What activities or organizations have you been involved with at Hofstra?
I helped establish a south Asian sorority on campus, Delta Phi Omega, and contributed to the diversification of our university community. The organization's philanthropy, Children's Education and Literacy, deeply resonated with my career aspirations. Throughout my involvement, I helped raise over $1,000 to support educational initiatives for children in India. Additionally, I actively participated in the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, holding positions as a volunteer chair and vice president. These roles enhanced my leadership, dedication, responsibility, and passion.
Were you involved in any research projects?
Yes, I completed my master's thesis this year which involved conducting research and writing a comprehensive thesis. Research has been a constant interest of mine, and this journey significantly contributed to my understanding of clinical practice, enhancing my abilities as a clinician and researcher. The experience provided valuable insight into the intricacies of the research world, specifically I learned how to effectively analyze and interpret results. Moreover, presenting and defending my thesis improved my confidence and public speaking skills. Overall, this experience equipped me with skills to succeed as a clinician, researcher, and presenter.
What was your thesis project?
My research thesis examined the role of cognition and language processing across healthy aging, utilizing eye-tracking methodology. I specifically examined the relationship between executive function (higher-level thinking skills) and verb processing and how it manifests across younger and older adults. This research study aimed to provide future insight into the treatment of neurological disorders that accompany aging. I was connected to the Zarb School of Business through my research mentor, and they provided the eye-tracking equipment for participant testing. My experience not only enriched my understanding of behavioral research but also expanded my knowledge in the field.
What will you miss the most about Hofstra?
I will miss all the friendship that I made at Hofstra in the past 5 1/2 years - connections that I know will last a lifetime! Additionally, I will sincerely miss the Speech-Language-Hearing-Science Department and the professors who have played an instrumental role in my personal growth and development as a student and clinician. I am immensely grateful for the enriching and fulfilling experience I have had at Hofstra, and I will leave with wonderful memories that I will cherish for a lifetime!
