Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Chemistry at Hofstra University. Chemistry plays a central role in many of today's scientific endeavors. As science has become increasingly interdisciplinary, fundamental scientific problems focus on the chemical nature of matter. The faculty and staff in our department at Hofstra University provide an exceptional environment where students can explore, discover, and learn science through coursework and research.
Our department consists of twelve full-time faculty members - all with Ph.D. degrees in their field. We currently have faculty with degrees in analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, physical and polymer chemistry. There are also more than a half dozen detectives affiliated with the New York City, Nassau and Suffolk County Police Departments who teach in our Forensic Science Program. Undergraduate majors at Hofstra University may earn either a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in Chemistry, bachelor of science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry, a B.S. degree in Biochemistry, or a B.S. degree in Forensic Science. The B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry are accredited by the American Chemical Society (ACS).
The Chemistry department is located in Berliner Hall, which is also home to the Physics department. The building is located directly across from the Biology department facilitating collaboration between the science departments. Our department is well equipped with modern instrumentation (see Facilities). All undergraduates have the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience with the instrumentation in various teaching classes and laboratories. In addition, undergraduates can gain valuable experience by participating in undergraduate research with an individual faculty member (see Faculty Research Interests) or in an internship opportunity.
Whether your interest is in the health professions, forensic science, teaching, cosmetic, environmental, food, pharmaceutical or industrial chemistry, or entering a graduate program, our department can help you achieve your career goals. We invite you to stop by and tour our facilities, talk to some of our faculty or send us an e-mail for more information.
