In addition to fulfilling educational studies, the New York State Education Department requires that all prospective teachers being recommended for certification through a teacher education program receive instruction in:
Fire and Arson Prevention – offered online
Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment – offered online
School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE) – offered online
Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Abuse (Substance Abuse) – offered online
Highway and School Safety/Prevention of Child Abduction – offered online
Harassment/Bullying Seminar (as required under the Dignity for All Students Act – DASA) – offered in-person only
Students who are in Inclusive, Special Education, Speech Language Pathology, and School Leadership programs are also required to complete training in autism, in addition to the seminars listed above.
Students in these programs will receive autism training as part of their required coursework, Hofstra University does not offer a separate seminar in autism. The following courses that cover training in autism are: SPED 248 or SPED 294 for students in Special Education programs, SPCH 241 for students in the Speech and Language Pathology program, and internship for students in the School Leadership program.
*Please note, students in the MSED Literacy Studies and Special Education program will not meet the required training in autism during their coursework. Students in the MSED Literacy Studies and Special Education program must speak with their advisor to discuss the appropriate way to complete the autism requirement.
No degree is conferred for teacher education, school counseling, speech and language disabilities, school psychology or school leadership candidates without the completion of all these requirements.
Seminar Descriptions:
Fire and Arson, in accordance with Education Law, section 808
A prescribed course of instruction in fire and arson prevention relating to the protection of life and property against loss or damage as a result of criminally initiated or other preventable fire, for use in the schools of the state. The course instruction includes material to educate children on the dangers of falsely reporting a criminal incident or impending explosion of fire emergency involving danger to life or property or impending catastrophe.

Identification of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, in accordance with Education Law, section 3004
Two hours of prescribed course of study for individuals applying for certification. The course includes information regarding the physical and behavioral indicators of child abuse and maltreatment and the statutory reporting requirements set out by the Commissioner, including how a report must be made, what other legal actions the reporter is mandated or authorized to take, the legal protections offered reporters and the consequences for failing to report.

This course provides instruction regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs so as to discourage the misuse and abuse of these substances and to promote attitudes and behaviors that enhance health, well being, and human dignity.

School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE), in accordance with Education Law, section 3004
This study is composed of a least two clock hours of course work that includes, study in the warning signs within a developmental and social context that relates to violence and other troubling behaviors in children; the statues, regulations and policies relating to a safe nonviolent school climate; effective classroom management techniques and other academic supports that promote a nonviolent school climate and enhance learning; the integration of social and problem solving skill development for students within the regular curriculum; intervention techniques designed to address a school violence situation; and how to participate in an effective school/community referral process for students exhibiting violent behavior.

Training in Harassment, Bullying, and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention in accordance with Education Law Article 2 Sections 10-18
Effective July 1, 2013 required under the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). Commissioner’s Regulations have been amended to require teacher, pupil personnel and school leadership preparation programs to include at least six hours of training in Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention. Topics include, but not limited to: understanding the intent components, and operational definitions of the Dignity Act; developing sensitivity to the experience of specific student populations; understanding how school climate and culture have an impact on student achievement and behavior; understanding bullying, harassment and discrimination, including indicators, early warning signs, prevention and intervention and how to interact with families of victims and aggressors; understanding diversity and multi-cultural environments and examining your own biases.
