Our Hofstra/Zucker School of Medicine is a beacon of medical education and I am proud to be able to contribute to our future physicians' education. The lifelong friendships which began many years ago at Hofstra continue to this day. These connections have helped enhance joyous moments and buoy me in more challenging times. My family and I feel blessed by the privilege and opportunity of paying this forward to Hofstra through several scholarships."

Charles R. Hale, a native New Yorker, is a cultural and musical historian. His focus is blending imagery and performance art to create uniquely New York experiences. His historically themed shows, including WWII and NYC: Connecting Time and Place, Crossing Boroughs, The Musical History of the Lower East Side, and New York City: A Shining Mosaic, have been performed at colleges, historical societies, clubs, and theaters in the New York City metro. His book Untangling the Shadows: Searching for the Voices of My New York Irish Ancestor is scheduled for release in fall 2023.
"I majored in finance at Hofstra, and it was the springboard into a career in the financial services industry. However, it was the courses in art history and music that opened my eyes to the arts, which has become a lifelong passion and is where my focus now lies. But, best of all, I met my beautiful, brilliant wife, Karen, at Hofstra. Since my Hofstra days, I have been fascinated with the fine arts and work hard to promote them whenever I can. My wife, Karen, became very involved in hospice care, as well as drug issues affecting the young – alcohol and drug abuse have become a major problem affecting people in all walks of life – and thus I set up an annual scholarship for those seeking a graduate degree in drug counseling."

Jerry Giovaniello graduated from Hofstra in 1964 with a BS in History/Political Science. He was a member of the Student Court. Mr. Giovaniello went on to earn a master's degree in history from NYU in 1966. He was a captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Following his career in the Army, he was a researcher for the National Journal, a nonpartisan magazine in Washington for congressional, agency, and presidential policy. He was the chief of staff for two members of Congress from 1971 to 1980 and a chief lobbyist for the National Association of Realtors from 1981 to 2018.
"Hofstra prepared me to adapt to unforeseen future challenges: Vietnam, abandoning a plan to teach history in college, etc. I had terrific and supportive professors who provided an open learning environment. I received a scholarship while at Hofstra. Otherwise, I would not have attended college. When I retired, I wanted to give back to Hofstra students what I received from Hofstra."

Mary E. Madden Endowed Scholarship

Having served as an exchange student during high school, Mary E. Madden wanted to pursue a career utilizing her language skills. She graduated from Hofstra in 1973 with a BA in Spanish, while carrying a course load in French and Italian. She subsequently was hired by one of the large CPA firms in its International Department.
"I was a sophomore transfer student from Albany State University. Not only did Hofstra accept all my credits from Albany, but they subsequently accepted credits from my time spent at the Universite de Dijon in France. Before graduating from Hofstra, I joined their study abroad program in Madrid, Spain. I have always believed that furthering one's education is one of the finest things anyone can do. Since I have an affection for the study of foreign languages, I wanted to ease some of the financial burden for a student within that department. My sole purpose is to help ease the financial burden most students face."

"I am a 1976 graduate of the Hofstra University School of Law (now the Maurice A. Deane School of Law). I became a member of the Board of Trustees of the University more than 20 years ago. My intent in making the scholarship gift to the University was and is to attract top academic students to Hofstra, for which the Honors College is a natural conduit. I was in the fourth graduating class of the Law School. I think we all appreciated being part of a new, exciting law school.
It is important that Hofstra has the ability to enroll a highly qualified and diverse student body, and one way to do this is to offer academic scholarships that make Hofstra more affordable and desirable to the students we want to attract to the University.
I hope we can continue to attract a highly qualified student body, which will lead to better outcomes in terms of academic success, retention, and graduation rates."
