How much does the master's program cost?

Are research/graduate assistantships available to students in the master's program?
  • The program offers six research assistantship positions every year. These positions are competitive and selection is based on academic merit. All students are automatically considered for them and application is not required.
  • Varied graduate assistantships on campus are also available to graduate students of the program. These assistantships can be found on the Hofstra portal by clicking on current jobs in the left-hand side menu once the student has received the login details for the portal. The Hofstra portal can be reached at my.hofstra.edu.
Where can I get funding or financial aid for this program?

Are there departmental scholarships I can apply for?
All students are considered for academic, merit-based scholarships only. These considerations are based on undergraduate grades as well as GRE scores. No application is required. All students are automatically considered for the scholarships.
Will I get paid for the internship portion of the program?
Most students have paid internships.
My department funds do not show up on my bill or account. How can I rectify this?

Student life

What is the atmosphere and relationship like between the students in the program?
The cohort style of the program facilitates a close relationship between students in the program. IOPSA, the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Student Association, plans several events throughout the year to encourage networking between all the master's students as well as between current and former students.
Is there a student organization?
Yes, there is an active student organization, IOPSA, which plans many events throughout the year. All students in the program are encouraged to be actively involved in the student organization.
Are students encouraged to participate in societies outside of the program?
Yes, students are encouraged to participate in societies like SIOP, Metro, ATD, SHRM, etc. Students are also encouraged to attend various events that provide opportunities to network with students from other schools.
Do master's students interact with PhD students?
Master's and PhD students frequently interact with each other. Students from both programs are often found studying and socializing in Room 105 Hauser Hall, which is the office for Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Hofstra.
What is the relationship like between the students and professors?
Professors and students interact frequently with each other both inside and outside of class.
Are there mentoring relationships between the students and alumni?
Hofstra maintains a close network with their alumni. Networking events are held frequently to build connections and create job opportunities.
What career resources are available for students? Are there career placement services available for students after duration of studies?
The Center for Career Design and Development on campus is available to students. They provide help with resumes, interviews, and other career advice. Information for the Center for Career Design and Development can be found at hofstra.edu/studentaffairs/studentservices/career/index.html. The Center for Career Design and Development is open to master's students as well as alumni.

What academic help or resources are provided for students?

Students can contact other students or faculty if they need any academic assistance.

Are students encouraged to go to SIOP conferences as a group or individually? Is that paid for by the department or school?

Students can attend the SIOP conferences as a group or individually. They generally pay their own way to go to the conferences. There is limited funding for a student who presents at a conference.
What are the entry requirements for the Industrial/Organizational Psychology master's program?
  1. Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Business, or a related field with a grade of B or better
  2. Completion of courses in Introductory Psychology and Elementary Statistics with a grade of B or better
  3. GRE Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing scores must be provided from an examination within the previous five years of the date of the application. For non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL may be required unless waived by Graduate Admission and/or the program director, after having received evidence of English-language proficiency
  4. A written statement of professional goals
  5. A personal interview for all qualified applicants
What are the requirements for the Industrial/Organizational Psychology master's program?
The Master of Arts in Industrial and Organizational Psychology comprises 15 courses totaling 44 semester hours.
Coursework includes:
  • Graduate Statistics I, 3 credits
  • Research Design, 4 credits
  • Foundation of Industrial/Organizational Psychology I: Industrial Psychology, 3 credits
  • Foundation of Industrial/Organizational Psychology II: Organizational Psychology, 3 credits
  • One internship in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, 3 credits
  • Organizational Development, 3 credits
  • Human Resource Management, 3 credits
  • Market Research, 3 credits
  • Personnel Selection, 3 credits
  • Measurement of Work Performance, 3 credits
  • Training and Development, 3 credits
  • Motivation, 3 credits
  • Ethics and Professional Practices in Psychology, 1 credit
  • Current Theory and Research in Social Psychology, 3 credits
A comprehensive examination must be taken and passed upon completion of 25 semester hours in the program in two attempts. The exam is offered on the first Monday in June. Students must maintain a B average with no more than one C per semester, or more than two C's toward the MA. Students who do not meet these requirements or who receive a D or an F in any course, will be dismissed from the program.

Graduation requires a completion of all program requirements and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in overall graduate coursework.
How many credits can be transferred from my undergraduate into the Industrial/Organizational Psychology master's program?
No more than 6 transfer credits are accepted toward the degree. These courses must be substantially equivalent to the courses offered in the Hofstra University MA program and must have been completed with a grade point average of 3.0 or better. Each transcript is evaluated individually.
Can I pursue a PhD degree after the Industrial/Organizational Psychology master's program?
Hofstra has a PhD program in Applied Organizational Psychology. Students who have completed the master's program can apply for admission into the PhD program at Hofstra University and continue their studies (38 of the 44 master's credits transfer to the PhD program).  
Can I be a part-time student?
Yes. Part-time students complete the program in three years.
How long does it take to obtain a master's degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology?
The program is designed to be completed in two years by full-time students. Part-time students would be expected to complete the program in three years.
When will I start the internship portion of this program?
The internship portion of the program will start in the second year after the student takes the comprehensive exam.
Can I do my internship at my current organization if I am already working?
Yes, if the student is working in an organization then the student can do the internship portion of the program at the organization.
How will I be able to get an internship?
The faculty in the MA program will facilitate the process of placing students in internships. It is important for students seeking their own internships to inform the internship director before applying for any position. The internship director must approve any internship that a student finds on their own. Students must contact the internship director before contacting any organizations regarding internships. The I/O program has established partnerships with both private and public organizations.
What sort of internships do I/O Psychology students generally participate in?
Students participate in internships at a variety of industrial and community organizations. The department has ongoing relationships with many public and private organizations through the internship program, including:

Will international students be able to do the internship portion of the program?
Yes, international students are eligible to complete the internship. Please visit Hofstra University's Office of International Student Affairs prior to accepting any internship offers and to ask any questions related to international students and their eligibility for work while studying in the United States. Do I have to take a comprehensive exam?
Yes, all students will have to take the comprehensive exams, otherwise known as COMPS, on the first Monday in June. Students may have two opportunities to pass this examination.
