Gain Knowledge from Experts in the Fields of Engineering and Seismology Each session is taught by professors from the Hofstra University Department of Engineering. There will be a whole lot of shaking going on at Earthquakes and Structures Summer Camp at Hofstra University. Kids will learn from Hofstra University Ph.D. professors how buildings can withstand the shake, rattle and roll of earthquakes. This is the ideal camp for boys and girls who dream of becoming architects or engineers or who just have a love of building and design. During this fascinating five-session camp, boys and girls, entering grades 6-11, learn basic concepts in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics, including concepts to design structures that can resist strong ground shaking caused by earthquakes. Together with Hofstra faculty and staff, campers participate in hands-on learning in a state-of-the-art lab that will explore topics, such as:
- Seismology
- Free and forced vibrations of structures
- Seismic ground motions
- Seismic-resistant structures
- Seismic shake-table testing
- And much more!
At Earthquakes and Structures Summer Camp, boys and girls will explore basic concepts of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics that can serve as a valuable jumping off point for a future career in engineering, architecture or science.
They’ll learn basic concepts of structural dynamics, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes, damping and dynamic resonance and amplification. They’ll also develop an appreciation of how earthquakes originate, how seismic waves propagate through the earth’s crust and what kinds of physical phenomena are caused by earthquakes at the ground surface.
By the end of the five sessions, campers will have an understanding of how structural engineers design structures that can resist strong ground-shaking caused by earthquakes and will have the ability to apply the scientific method and analyze data in an engineering context.
