The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication has established a significant number of scholarships through its extensive network of notable alumni and friends. These donors help qualified students pursue their education and prepare for rewarding careers in the media and communications industry.
Endowed Scholarships
Hofstra University’s Donor Scholarship Program provides tremendous opportunities and financial assistance to deserving Hofstra students. The following endowed scholarships help underwrite all or a portion of a student’s award from the university. Students are considered for these funds when they apply for financial aid and selection is based on a student’s match with a donor’s criteria.

Additional Scholarships & Awards
Once enrolled at Hofstra University, eligible Herbert School majors may apply to be considered for the following donor-funded scholarships and awards listed below. These awards provide modest assistance in addition to Hofstra’s financial aid. Unless otherwise noted, these scholarships are awarded to rising juniors and seniors.
The application deadline is May 31 for scholarships that will be awarded for the upcoming academic year. Since scholarships may be renewed, not all scholarships will be available every year. Students must have a FAFSA on file to be considered for all Herbert School scholarships
Bruce Avery Endowed Scholarship
- Lawrence Herbert School of Communication student
- Exemplary members of WRHU 88.7 FM Radio Hofstra University, have made significant contributions to the station, and are viewed as respected members of the staff
Marvin I. Bernstein Endowed Scholarship in Communication Arts
- Journalism major
- Preference given to a student with an interest in sports journalism
- Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major and financial need
Bill Bleyer Endowed Scholarship in Journalism
- One or more Journalism majors selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and financial need
- Preference given to students with an interest in print or digital journalism, who experience living or working in diverse environments and/or those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds
Robert W. Greene - Press Club of Long Island Annual Scholarship
- Journalism major
- Demonstrated academic achievement
- Preference given to a student with an interest in investigative journalism
Herbert School of Communication Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship
- Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major
- Participation in school clubs/organizations
Max Benjamin Kolb Scholarship
- Junior and Senior Film majors
- Demonstrated scholastic achievement and talent in major and/or financial need
- One-time award, not renewable
John L. Kominicki Memorial Annual Scholarship
- Established in loving memory of John L. Kominicki, a veteran journalist widely recognized as a force for innovation and a champion of the hard-boiled work ethic of classic journalism.
- Junior, Senior, or graduate Journalism student selected on the basis of demonstrated academic achievement and financial need
- May be renewed one time provided that the student remains eligible

- Journalism major
- Preference given to a student with an interest in broadcast journalism
- Demonstrated scholastic achievement in major and/or financial need
Newsday Endowed Scholarship in Journalism
- Journalism major
- Demonstrated academic achievement and financial need
William J. O’Hara ’02 Film Award
- Senior Film Studies & Production or related majors
- Selected on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need
- One-time award to be applied toward the cost of their senior films
- Awarded from 2021 to 2025
Joel Oliansky '59 Annual Scholarship
- Lawrence Herbert School of Communication student with a demonstrated interest and/or passion for playwriting or screenwriting
- Selected on the basis of academic achievement or potential
- Awarded upon the recommendation from the Chairperson of the Department of Radio, Television, Film
Ann Parry Multimedia Journalism Endowed Scholarship
- Student studying photojournalism, multimedia journalism, or a related major
- Demonstrated academic achievement or potential, as well as an interest in civic engagement
The Francis Frost Wood Endowed Memorial Scholarship and Internship
- Public Relations major
- Demonstrated scholastic achievement or potential in major
- Student will intern at Newsday or a Long Island nonprofit agency
