Sports Journalism: Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What are the Program Ages?

Question: When are Programs Typically Offered?

Programs are typically offered from late September to early June and from July to August.
From September to June we typically offer programs on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on weekends (Saturday or Sunday from 9 am to 12 pm or 3 pm).
During the summer months (July to August) we typically offer over 15 programs during a 6-week period. All summer programs run from Monday – Friday from 9 am to 4 pm; excluding any national holidays.

Question: What the Qualifications of our Instructors?

All of our instructors are current industry professionals with college degrees in Communication and/or Journalism.
Additionally, we have a great series of guest speakers scheduled for our programs. The guest speakers are available via in-person, skype or phone calls. Typically, our guest speakers include but are not limited to Kenny Albert, Mike Breen, and Freddie Coleman.

Question: What is Included in Program Tuition?

Inclusive in program tuition are:
- All program supplies.
- Demo reel for selected programs – typically any program that a student has a recording (audio and/or on-camera experiences).
- Catered lunch (only applicable for programs offered during the summer).

Question: Typical Program Day?

Students arrive at the classroom.
Attendance is taken by our instructor.
Our instructor(s) review the daily syllabus/curriculum plan.
Students are in the Classroom and/or Computer Lab and/or Audio Recording Studio and/or TV Recording Studio for the duration of the program.
Recreation and/or Swimming time is not available for any Sports Journalism and Broadcasting Program.

Question: What type of Lunch and Beverages are Served During the Summer?

Our Introduction and Intermediate to Sportscasting for Teens Programs typically have a catered lunch brought into the classroom. The menu is either, an assortment of deli sandwiches, a selection of hot food (chicken fingers, French fries, pasta) or pizza.
For other summer related programs students go to a Hofstra Dining Center for a catered lunch and can select from an array of choices; such as, but not limited to:
- Hot Entrees: pizza, chicken fingers, grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers and hot dogs, fish sticks, spaghetti and meatballs
- Side Dishes: french fries, carrots, corn, green beans
- Sandwiches: turkey, roast beef, tuna, cheese, peanut butter and jelly, bagels
- Fruit Bar: bananas, pears, sliced oranges, sliced cantaloupe, sliced watermelon
- Salad Bar: yogurt, fruit, fresh vegetables, tossed salad, macaroni salad, potato salad
- Beverages: assorted milks and juices
- Desserts (one served daily): ice cream, Italian ices, cookies, brownies, pudding
At any time a brown bag lunch can be brought to the program by the student.

Question: What are the Requirements of the Sports Journalism & Broadcasting Certificate Program?

Question: Demo Reel Files – How are They Communicated?

Hofstra shall communicate your child’s demo reel either via:
- Hand-delivered to your child during at the conclusion of the class; or
- Via a flash drive that will be mailed to your residence shortly after the program has concluded; or
- mailed via Google Drives. To save the file, you must download it to your own computer from the Google Drive link. Footage will be saved on the Google Drives for 30-days from original posting. Once it is deleted you will no longer have access.
Footage is typically provided a minimum of 2-weeks after a program has completed due to editing by our staff.

Question: What to Bring to Classes?

Writing utensil and/or Pad
Hofstra shall provide appropriate classroom/computer lab access for all students.
For any on-camera recordings – students are instructed ahead of time via email as to what date the recordings will occur and what professional attire (eg: dress shirt, blouse, suit jacket, tie) to wear and bring to class.
Hofstra is NOT responsible for lost items.

Question: Are any Forms Required to Take the Summer Related Programs?

Yes – since catering is available for all summer Programs and Medical and Registration form agreement is required to be completed and forwarded back to the Continuing Education Office.

Question: Is Transportation Available?

Yes – transportation is only available ONLY for summer related programs.
Transportation is optional for an additional fee. Contact our office at 516-463-5909 for additional details.
Transportation must be confirmed a minimum of 2-weeks prior to any summer program commencement date.
Door-to-Door Transportation is available for Nassau County and Area-Pickup locations available for certain sections of Suffolk County, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan
If transportation is confirmed by Hofstra Continuing Education office – you will be notified via email and/or telephone call prior to program commencement.
The bus provider is Veterans Transportation, Inc.
The bus company will notify you as to the pickup time.
Upon arrival at Hofstra staging area – your child(ren) will be checked in and escorted by Hofstra staff to the Sports Journalism & Broadcasting designated room location. Upon dismissal, at 3:30 pm, all bus participants will be escorted from the room location back the Hofstra staging area for the bus ride home. Our Sports Journalism and Broadcasting instructors will ensure that minimal classroom activities (prep time is missed) and ALL interviews, audio and/or TV recordings are completed prior to dismissal and the conclusion of the program.
