Mission Statement
The mission of the Hofstra University Department of Music is to provide a varied and balanced program that encourages students to reach a high level of ability, knowledge and understanding of music. The basic curriculum for majors stresses the interpretation of musical styles through the development of performance skills and the understanding of musical language in historical contexts primarily through the study of western music theory, analysis, history and performance. We offer, in addition, a variety of courses in multicultural music education, jazz and commercial music, and music from around the world, with special emphasis on Sikh music.
Our curriculum supports several different academic degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Music; Bachelor of Science in Music and Music Education; Master of Arts in Education; and Master of Science in Education. Our B.S. degrees encourage students to reach professional levels of ability, knowledge and understanding in music and related fields through concentrated study in one of the following categories: music education, music business, performance, theory/composition, history and literature, and jazz and commercial music. The B.A. in Music degree, which combines specializations in music with a broad background in liberal arts, prepares graduates for a range of further educational and vocational activities.
The Music Department also provides numerous and varied performance opportunities for majors and non-majors, including large ensembles — the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, University Chorus, Chorale and Opera Theater — and small ensembles (including the Jazz Band, Collegium Musicum, Indian Music Ensemble, Chamber Choir, String Orchestra and New Music Ensemble). Select student performers also present solo and group recitals.
