REACH-TRANSITIONS (REALISTIC EXPERIENCES AT CAMP HOFSTRA)
Hofstra University Summer Camps – "Growing up and transitioning to adulthood."

Hofstra Summer Camps REACH Program for Teens helps campers with disabilities transition to adulthood. It is often difficult for an individual with special needs to find a job, and once they find a job, can they maintain it? There are many skills one must have to maintain employment, make and keep friends, live independently, etc. Our goal is for individuals with special needs to become increasingly independent, learn the responsibilities and benefits of working, and obtain independent daily living skills. Responsibilities and tasks will be adapted to meet the needs and ability level of each participant.

This program encourages individuals with special needs to put their newly acquired skills to the test! Participants will gain confidence navigating their environment by taking field trips to local establishments, such as the post office (to mail a letter) and the bank (to open an account and learn how to write a check).

This program will include structured social activities supervised by Hofstra University Summer Camps staff. Our staff will assist students with the development of their social skills and help them make appropriate friendships with peers and adults. Hofstra University Summer Camps staff will assess how students work in a group, their interest in tasks, as well as their comprehension of tasks. All participants are supervised by a Hofstra University Summer Camps staff job coach/mentor.
