The REACH program is a fully inclusive program that offers campers with special needs an opportunity to participate in all activities at Hofstra Summer Camp with their peers. For campers entering 2-5 grade, morning will be in a specialty program of choice and the afternoon will be spent in recreation activities with a peer group of 8-10 campers of the same grade and gender. For campers entering 6-10 grade, mornings will be spent in recreation activities with a peer group of 8-10 campers of the same grade and the afternoon will be spent in a specialty program of choice. Recreational activities are fully inclusive and provide campers with special needs the opportunity to engage and interact with their peers while participating in recreational sports and activities, outdoor/ indoor games, lunch and swim.
The REACH Program provides a safe and positive environment for campers with disabilities to participate in Specialty Camps/Learning Institute activities with their peers. In this inclusion model, they enjoy playing games, completing projects and other peer interactions. Campers in the REACH program may receive visual supports and/or modifications when necessary, under the supervision of the REACH director. Campers in the REACH program may also receive 1:1 support from a capable, hard- working volunteer high school student to help them navigate the camp schedule.
The REACH Program provides a perfect setting for ongoing interventions during the summer break. Campers have ample opportunities to generalize and enhance social and daily living skills.
