Welcome to MSTP Project

The five-year MSTP Project is targeted toward improving teaching and learning in middle-level mathematics in New York. Core and supporting partners will develop and implement a program model that increases the diversity of New York's teaching workforce, enhances university faculty's understanding of middle school reform, learning standards, and assessments; increases middle school mathematics, science, and technology teachers' understanding of mathematics content and pedagogy; and improves curriculum alignment among the three disciplines.

Project Summary

Title: Mathematics Across the Middle School MST Curriculum (the MSTP Project)

Lead Partner: Hofstra University

Additional Core Partners: State University of New York at Stony Brook; New York Education Department; and 10 Long Island school districts (Amityville Union Free School District, Brentwood Union Free School District, Freeport Central School District, Glen Cove City School District, Hempstead Union Free School District, Longwood Central School District, Riverhead Central School District, Uniondale Union Free School District, William Floyd Central School District, Wyandanch Union Free School District)

Number of Teachers and Students Directly Engaged in the Project: 300 teachers, 20 higher education faculty, and 12, 000 students per year.

The five-year MSTP Project is targeted toward improving teaching and learning in middle-level mathematics in New York. Core and supporting partners will develop and implement a program model that increases the diversity of New York's teaching workforce, enhances university faculty's understanding of middle school reform, learning standards, and assessments; increases middle school mathematics, science, and technology teachers' understanding of mathematics content and pedagogy; and improves curriculum alignment among the three disciplines.

Intellectual Merit. MSTP integrates three components; 1) collaborative professional development for school-based and higher education faculty; 2) curriculum revision and alignment; and 3) recruitment of underrepresented minority undergraduates in mathematics, science, and engineering into teaching careers. A program supporting students and parents is provided. Collaboration among higher education disciplinary faculty and MST teachers underpins the Project's approach. MSTP draws on six successful NSF projects conducted by the co-PIs over the last decade.

Broader Impacts. Over the five-year period, MSTP will expand its reach statewide. The program will be widely disseminated and sustained by partner districts and NYSED. An implementation guide will be published for use in conducting professional development within, and modeled after the Project. One hundred underrepresented minority students will be recruited to become mathematics or science teachers.
