J-DIV Journal, July 2009 is the news journal reported, written and photographed by high school students in Hofstra University's J-DIV program. Ten students from Nassau and Suffolk County high schools spent two weeks learning the rudiments of journalism. This is the first fruit of a project funded by the Long Island Index and the Rauch Foundation.

The world is going through some extraordinary changes right now and it is important to have bright, curious, intelligent young men and women who know how to find the story and bring it home.
This summer, Hofstra University’s School of Communication offered a FREE two-week journalism program, J-DIV July 6 through July 17, 2009, for high school students to learn journalism skills. Ten motivated and promising students from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds were chosen to report on stories about some of the important issues facing their hometowns, families and Long Island.
Besides basic research and reporting, some of Hofstra’s award-winning faculty members teach students how to use flip-cameras and other state of the art equipment.
Once completed, the students’ story packages will be placed on the J-DIV website and will be presented at a roundtable discussion featuring representatives from Long Island organizations about the problems facing our communities. The students will also receive a $200 stipend upon completion.
The deadline to apply for this exciting opportunity is June 5, 2009.
